How to add another device

This guide shows you how to give another Mac or iPhone access to your vault by pairing it with a device you already use.

Before you start

  • Have both devices with you, and keep them close together for the whole process.
  • Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • The existing device must be unlocked.
  • Know your passphrase — you’ll enter it on the new device.

You have about five minutes to finish pairing once you start, before the code expires. If it does, just start again.

On your existing device: start pairing

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Add Device….
  3. Leave this screen showing. It displays a QR code, and a Copy Pairing Code button if you’d rather share the code another way.

On your new device: join the vault

  1. Open Fixative and choose to Join Existing Vault.
  2. Enter a name for this device.
  3. Scan the QR code shown on your existing device. If the camera won’t scan it, tap Enter code manually and paste the copied pairing code instead.

On both devices: confirm the security code

  1. Each device now shows a short security code under Confirm Security Code.
  2. Check that the code is the same on both devices.
  3. Tap Codes Match on each device.

On your new device: unlock and set a PIN

  1. Enter your vault passphrase when prompted.
  2. Create a PIN of 4 to 12 digits for this device, then confirm it. This PIN is just for this device.

Your existing device shows Device Added, and your new device shows Vault Joined. Tap Get Started on the new device.

What to expect after pairing

Your devices sync directly to each other — there’s no cloud in between. They exchange photos and changes when both are open and on the same network; syncing pauses when an app moves to the background. You can watch progress and restart syncing under the sync section of Settings.

To let devices find each other, keep Discover devices on local network turned on in Settings on each device.
